The promise behind every policy.
Every policy written and every claim settled shapes how an insurer is seen. With the right underwriting and claims professionals in place, portfolios grow on terms leadership is comfortable with, claims are settled consistently and policyholders stay confident from first quote to final payment. That’s growth the business can stand behind, and a reputation that holds.
We specialise in underwriting and claims recruitment across Hong Kong and Mainland China. We introduce underwriting, claims, policy administration, insurance operations and customer service professionals to global insurers and multinational corporations, so the business you write is sound and the commitments behind it are kept.
Distribution & Broking for brokers, insurers and MGAs
Each of our consultants specialises in one area rather than working as a generalist. In underwriting and claims, that means keeping our market knowledge current every day, tracking how AI-assisted underwriting and claims triage are reshaping teams, how new roles like HNW case manager and claims governance manager are defined, and how pay is moving. For Head of Underwriting and Chief Claims Officer appointments, our executive search service weighs leadership and influence alongside technical background.
The strongest hires add value beyond their job description. Line-of-business depth, authority limits and reserving experience are the foundation, alongside:
- Judgement: sound decisions at the edge of their authority
- Integrity: care with disputed and sensitive cases
- Communication: confidence with brokers and policyholders in the languages the role needs
- Every candidate is screened by a consultant who knows this market, beyond titles and certifications.
We recruit across the insurance value chain, from first policy to final settlement:
- Claims: claims associates through to chief claims officers, across life and health, property and casualty, marine and financial lines, including HNW and complex claims.
- Customer Service: policy owner service and customer experience professionals, from service officers to the managers leading service and complaint handling teams.
- Insurance Operations: new business, operations management and process improvement specialists, including project hires around system and process change.
- Policy Admin: policy administration, endorsement and renewal professionals, and the team leads overseeing policy servicing and data quality.
- Underwriting: assistant underwriters through to chief underwriting officers, across life, medical, commercial lines, financial lines and specialty.
For global insurers and reinsurers, we look beyond individual skills to authority levels, team structure and how a hire will work with distribution, actuarial and operations colleagues, including where contract support helps through a migration or a rise in claims volumes.
For brokers, loss adjusters and multinational corporations’ in-house risk teams, we focus on client-facing credibility and multi-insurer programme experience. Language requirements and Hong Kong to Mainland China relocation timelines are part of every brief.
Our permanent recruitment and contract hiring pages explain each model in more detail.
We support organisations where underwriting quality and claims service carry real commercial and reputational weight:
- Insurtech: digital and insurtech units within global insurers, where underwriting, claims and service teams work alongside new digital customer journeys.
- FMCG & Consumer Goods: multinational corporations with in-house insurance and risk teams managing corporate insurance programmes and claims.
- Professional Services: loss adjusting and claims consultancy firms supporting insurers on complex and specialist claims.
- Re-Insurance: reinsurers and the reinsurance arms of global insurers, writing business from across the region through Hong Kong.
- Brokers: global broking firms, where placement and claims advocacy roles call for genuine underwriting and claims knowledge.
Underwriting and claims hiring benefits from a recruiter who understands how authority, portfolio mix and service standards differ between organisations. Before anyone reaches your interview stage, our consultants explore the books candidates have written, the claims they’ve managed, the cases they’ve referred and the teams they’ve led.
We share current salary insight, realistic availability and how similar profiles are moving across Hong Kong and Mainland China, so you can plan with confidence. Our network of 900,000+ candidates and our long-standing relationships across the insurance market support every search, whether you’re hiring a single specialist or building a regional team.
Distribution and broking market intelligence
The mix depends on your lines of business and where the team sits. CII and ANZIIF designations come up across general insurance briefs, LOMA and Academy of Life Underwriting designations across life and medical, and the IIQE where a role involves regulated activity. On the framework side, experience under Hong Kong’s risk-based capital framework and IFRS 17 is increasingly relevant to senior underwriting roles, as are C-ROSS for Mainland China teams and VHIS for medical underwriting and claims.
Our consultants explore how candidates have applied these in practice: how an underwriter has adjusted appetite as capital requirements changed, how a claims lead has kept reserving disciplined under new reporting, or how a policy administration manager has kept data reliable through a system change. Qualifications show commitment. Applied experience shows how someone will work within your organisation’s frameworks, and that’s where our conversations focus.
Underwriting and claims pay rises steadily with seniority and the scale of authority a role carries. Ranges widen considerably at leadership level, with regional director and chief officer roles in Hong Kong reaching HK$200,000 or more a month. Mainland China ranges follow a similar shape in RMB. As a guide, current monthly base salaries are:
- Senior Underwriter: HK$45,000 to HK$65,000; RMB 25,000 to 40,000
- Underwriting Manager: HK$60,000 to HK$85,000; RMB 35,000 to 55,000
- Senior Manager / Head of Underwriting: HK$85,000 to HK$130,000; RMB 50,000 to 85,000
- Claims Manager: HK$58,000 to HK$78,000; RMB 32,000 to 50,000
- Senior Manager / Head of Claims: HK$78,000 to HK$120,000; RMB 45,000 to 75,000
These figures are base salary only, with bonuses and benefits on top. For other underwriting and claims levels, customer service, insurance operations and policy administration roles, and contract rates, visit our benchmarking page for tailored guidance by role, seniority and location.
AI is moving some underwriting and claims decisions earlier. Insurers in Hong Kong are now using tools that return preliminary underwriting indications at the point of sale and help triage claims as they arrive, and Hong Kong’s financial regulators have named AI-driven underwriting and claims handling among the use cases they’re supporting through industry programmes.
That changes what you might look for in a hire. Someone has to decide where automated decisions stop and referrals begin, set the authority limits a tool works within, and handle the cases it escalates. Underwriters and claims leads who’ve shaped those rules, reviewed exceptions and explained outcomes to brokers and policyholders bring something the tools can’t. Customer service teams are shifting in a similar way, towards the conversations a chatbot hands over.
Data handling matters too. Personal data used in these tools falls under Hong Kong’s Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance and, for Mainland China teams, the Personal Information Protection Law, and further AI guidance for Hong Kong insurers is expected. When you’re interviewing, asking candidates how they’ve overseen automated decisions can tell you a lot.
Language capability means different things in different roles. An underwriter may need to read and negotiate policy wordings in English while discussing risks with brokers in Cantonese. A claims handler supporting Mainland China policyholders may need fluent Mandarin and an understanding of how claims are documented across the border. A regional leader may need all three languages to work across teams.
So rather than treating language as a single requirement, our consultants explore how candidates have used each language in their work, from drafting and negotiation to handling sensitive conversations with policyholders. We also look at experience of working across Hong Kong and Mainland China teams, and of the different regulatory and service expectations in each, so your new hire can contribute from the start.
