Software Development & Engineering  Recruitment

Strong engineering keeps capital moving.

Hong Kong’s financial institutions run platforms that connect global markets, regional clients and the Mainland. The software engineers behind them make that connection reliable, from order routing and market data to digital banking and wealth apps. With the right people in place, new markets and products go live smoothly, and your leadership team can expand regionally knowing the platform will keep pace.

We specialise in software development and engineering recruitment for financial services across Hong Kong and Mainland China. We recruit application support, architecture, blockchain, C#, C++, DevOps and SRE, Java, KDB, mobile, Python, and QA and testing professionals who keep critical platforms resilient as they evolve.

Software engineering recruitment for Financial Services

Each of our consultants specialises in one area rather than working as a generalist. In financial services software engineering, that means keeping our market knowledge current every day. We track how KDB+, cloud platforms and tokenisation infrastructure are reshaping teams, how new roles like AI platform engineer and trading SRE are defined, and how pay is moving. For CTOs and Heads of Engineering, our expertise extends into executive search, where leadership and influence matter as much as technical background.

The strongest hires add value beyond their job description. Technical depth in C++, Java, Python, q or cloud tooling is the foundation, alongside:

  • Reliability: owning what they ship into production
  • Cross-border collaboration: working smoothly with global and Mainland teams
  • Sound judgement: knowing when speed matters and when control comes first

Every candidate is screened by a consultant who knows this market, looking beyond titles and certifications.

We recruit across software development and engineering, from production support through to platform architecture:

  • Application Support: production and application support engineers who keep trading, risk and client platforms stable through the trading day and the overnight batch.
  • Architecture: solution, enterprise and platform architects who shape how systems scale, integrate and stay resilient.
  • Blockchain: engineers building tokenisation, digital asset and distributed ledger platforms within regulated institutions.
  • C#: developers building front-office tools, pricing and risk applications, and trader-facing desktops.
  • C++: low-latency and quantitative developers working on execution, market access and analytics libraries.
  • DevOps & SRE: engineers who automate delivery and bring reliability practices to trading and research infrastructure.
  • Java: developers building order management, connectivity, post-trade and banking platforms.
  • KDB: q developers and KDB+ engineers working on tick data capture, analytics and research tooling.
  • Mobile: iOS and Android engineers delivering secure banking, wealth and trading apps.
  • Python: developers supporting quant research, data pipelines, automation and analytics.
  • QA & Testing: test engineers and automation specialists who protect release quality in controlled environments.

If you’re building an in-house team at a bank, hedge fund or multinational corporation, our conversations cover team shape, culture and long-term fit as much as individual skills. The right engineer earns credibility with both the business and technology leadership, and keeps delivery moving alongside production commitments. We’ll also help you decide which roles to make permanent, where contract support adds value during a migration or regulatory deadline, and how to sequence hires so momentum isn’t lost.

If you’re a consultancy or professional services firm resourcing a financial institution’s programme, we keep the process skills-led and delivery-focused. Candidates need to be client-ready from day one, and client requirements around domain experience, language skills or onboarding checks can be specific. We work to those constraints, alongside rates, contract length, extension options and notice periods. For roles that span Hong Kong and Mainland China, we also clarify early where the role will be based and which entity will engage the hire.

We offer permanent, contract and executive search hiring. See our permanent recruitment and contract hiring pages for more detail.

We support organisations where engineering underpins financial decisions and client trust:

  • Global banks: front-office, risk, operations and digital banking technology.
  • Hedge funds and asset managers: trading, research and data platforms built for speed and scale.
  • Digital and fintech teams within financial institutions: payments, wealth and tokenisation initiatives developed inside regulated firms.
  • Global insurers: policy, claims and distribution platforms modernising within regional hubs.
  • Multinational corporations: finance, treasury and payments technology within FMCG, consumer goods and professional services firms, as a growing number of overseas and Mainland parent companies run operations from Hong Kong.

A specialist recruiter brings an understanding of how financial technology is built and run to every stage of hiring, from sourcing and assessment to market insight. The right engineer protects platform stability and speeds up change at the same time, so a well-matched hire has a lasting impact.

Our consultants explore what candidates have built, supported and improved, and how they have worked within change control and production governance, before they reach your interview stage. We share up-to-date pay insight, realistic availability and a clear view of how similar profiles are moving across Hong Kong and Mainland China, so you can plan with confidence. Our network of 900,000+ candidates means we can approach engineers who may not be visible on job boards.

We work across permanent, contract and executive search hiring, and our understanding of banking, buy-side and corporate technology shapes the brief, the search and the shortlist. That approach has earned Gravitas 50+ awards.

Financial services software market intelligence

The mix depends on the desk, the platform and how far a firm has moved to the cloud. Our consultants explore depth rather than keyword matches:

  • Low-latency roles: whether candidates have tuned C++ or Java systems in production, and how they measured the result.
  • KDB roles: whether their q experience comes from tick data capture or from research and analytics.
  • DevOps and SRE roles: how they have run Kubernetes, Terraform and CI/CD in environments with strict change control.

Messaging and connectivity experience, including FIX, remains valuable across trading technology. Cloud certifications on AWS and Azure carry more weight when they’re backed by a migration the candidate has delivered.

Local priorities are adding new layers. Hong Kong’s fintech strategy places tokenisation, data and payment infrastructure, and quantum resilience at its centre. That’s raising interest in engineers with distributed ledger experience who also understand regulated delivery. Closer integration between Hong Kong and Shenzhen is also lifting the value of engineers who can work across both technology environments and, where needed, in English and Mandarin.

Pay in this market follows a clear pattern. Packages rise from investment banks to standard buy-side firms, and rise significantly again at top-tier buy-side firms, where performance bonus can match or exceed base salary at senior levels. C++ developers command the highest packages at each level, reflecting demand for low-latency expertise. Mainland China salaries sit below Hong Kong for equivalent roles. That gap is worth factoring in when you plan where a team will be based or how work is split across the two locations.

As a guide, current market data puts base salaries for mid-level engineers at:

  • C# and Java developers (3 to 8 years): HKD 660,000 - 960,000 in Hong Kong; RMB 350,000 - 580,000* in Mainland China
  • C++ developers (3 to 6 years): HKD 900,000 - 1,300,000 in Hong Kong; RMB 450,000 - 750,000* in Mainland China
  • Production support (3 to 6 years): HKD 520,000 - 780,000 in Hong Kong; RMB 240,000 - 420,000* in Mainland China

AI is making explainability part of the engineering brief. As banks and funds move from experimenting with AI to running it in production, the engineers who stand out can show how a model-backed feature behaves, how it was tested and how it can be switched off safely.

Governance shapes that work. Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission has set expectations for licensed corporations using generative AI language models, with stricter treatment for high-risk uses such as investment advice and research. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has issued its own guidance on customer protection in generative AI. In Mainland China, AI-generated content has had to carry labels since September 2025. Engineers who have delivered within frameworks like these can keep an AI initiative moving through approval rather than stalling at it.

It also changes what to test for. With AI-assisted coding now part of the workflow in some teams, asking candidates how they review and validate generated code in a controlled environment can tell you a lot about their judgement.

Tokenisation has moved from pilot projects into live infrastructure in Hong Kong, and that’s reshaping technology hiring in banks and asset managers. The territory’s fintech strategy treats the tokenisation of real-world assets as a core pillar. Pilots now use tokenised deposits in fund transactions, and the first licensed stablecoin issuers were approved in 2026.

For hiring managers, this creates demand for a blend of skills that’s still uncommon. That blend means distributed ledger engineering combined with the resilience, custody and reconciliation discipline of traditional banking technology. Engineers who have integrated a ledger with core banking, payments or fund administration systems can be especially valuable. So can architects who can explain those designs to risk and compliance colleagues.

Our consultants explore where candidates’ blockchain experience sits, from public-chain development to permissioned platforms inside regulated firms, so your shortlist reflects the work your programme involves.
