Growth runs on the right control.
Audit, risk and compliance professionals give a bank the confidence to take on new business. For leadership, that means growth that holds up under regulatory scrutiny, in Hong Kong and across Mainland China.
We specialise in banking audit, risk and compliance recruitment across Hong Kong & Mainland China, connecting banks, hedge funds and fintechs with risk management, compliance and financial crime, and internal audit professionals.
Audit, Risk & Compliance recruitment for Banks & Investors
Every audit, risk and compliance brief starts with a consultant who specialises in one area of banking control rather than working as a generalist. That means keeping our market knowledge current every day, tracking how stablecoin licensing and tokenised settlement are reshaping teams, how new roles like digital asset compliance and reserve assurance are defined, and how pay is moving across Hong Kong and Mainland China. The conversation begins from shared understanding and up-to-date market intelligence.
For senior appointments such as Chief Risk Officer, Head of Financial Crime Compliance or Chief Audit Executive, our expertise extends into executive search, where the ability to influence a board and lead a function across the region matters as much as technical background.
The strongest hires add value beyond their job description, so we look at the whole picture. Technical capability is the foundation, whether in credit, market, operational and liquidity risk, AML/CFT, sanctions and KYC, or financial, operational and IT audit, alongside three qualities that earn trust:
- Independence: the confidence to challenge the business and stand behind a finding.
- Judgement: knowing when an issue needs escalating and when it needs a proportionate fix.
- Discretion: handling investigations, client data and regulatory matters with care.
Every candidate is screened by a consultant who knows this market, looking beyond job titles and certifications to what they have identified, remediated and reported on in practice.
We recruit across the three lines of defence, from first-line controls to independent assurance:
- Risk Management: credit, market, operational and liquidity risk, from first-line risk and control roles through to enterprise risk leadership.
- Compliance & Financial Crime: regulatory compliance, advisory, monitoring and testing, AML/CFT, sanctions and KYC, including investigations and remediation programmes.
- Internal Audit: financial, operational and IT audit, from auditors and audit managers through to heads of audit for a business line or the region.
If you’re strengthening an established function at a global bank, our conversations focus on how the role fits your lines of defence, your regional reporting structure and the expectations of your group as well as local regulators. The right hire earns credibility with the business in Hong Kong and with group functions overseas, and keeps work moving alongside inspections and audit cycles. We’ll also help you decide where a permanent hire builds lasting capability and where contract support adds value, for example during a remediation programme or a periodic review backlog.
If you’re a hedge fund or fintech building risk and compliance capability for the first time, or scaling it after a licence application, we keep things practical. Candidates need to be comfortable as a small team’s first point of contact, setting up frameworks as well as running them. Licensing timelines can be tight, and we work to them, alongside contract terms, extension options and onshore employment arrangements for Mainland China.
We offer permanent, contract and executive search hiring. See our permanent recruitment and contract hiring pages for more detail.
We support organisations where the strength of their control functions shapes commercial and regulatory standing:
- Global banks: investment, corporate and private banking businesses, where control functions span local, regional and group reporting lines.
- Hedge funds: firms where risk and compliance sit close to the trading desk and move at the pace of the portfolio.
- Fintech: digital banks, payments and digital asset businesses, where new products and new licensing requirements develop side by side.
A hire into a control function carries more weight than the title suggests, because that person shapes how regulators, auditors and the board see your bank. A specialist approach means that understanding informs the brief, the search and the shortlist.
Before anyone reaches your interview stage, our consultants explore what candidates have identified, challenged and remediated, how they have handled regulatory inspections, and how they have worked across Hong Kong and Mainland reporting lines. We share current salary insight, realistic availability and a view of how similar profiles are moving across the region, so you can plan with confidence. Our network of 900,000+ candidates, and the relationships our consultants build over time, help us reach professionals who may not be actively looking. Our work has been recognised with 50+ awards.
Audit, Risk & Compliance market intelligence
Every audit, risk and compliance hiring process starts with what the role needs to achieve. Preparing for an HKMA inspection, remediating findings or localising a group framework each call for a different profile, so our consultants begin with your brief before looking at credentials.
The HKMA’s Enhanced Competency Framework, alongside CAMS, FRM, CIA and CISA, gives a shared foundation to work from. What our consultants explore is how that knowledge has been applied: building or recalibrating a monitoring programme, testing controls ahead of an inspection, or adapting a group framework to Hong Kong requirements. For roles that span Mainland China, we also look at the onshore regulatory experience candidates bring and how they have worked across both sets of requirements.
Where your team is moving towards more data-led monitoring and testing, we explore the analytics experience candidates bring to compliance and audit as well as risk, so your shortlist reflects the skills your function will need next.
Pay in this market varies by specialism, seniority and type of institution. Banks in Hong Kong saw staff costs rise noticeably in 2025, a sign of continued competition for experienced talent, and control functions are no exception. As a guide, for professionals with four to eight years’ experience:
- Risk Management: HKD 650,000 - 1,000,000 in Hong Kong; RMB 320,000 - 580,000 in Mainland China.
- Compliance & Financial Crime: HKD 600,000 - 950,000 in Hong Kong; RMB 300,000 - 540,000 in Mainland China.
- Internal Audit: HKD 550,000 - 850,000 in Hong Kong; RMB 260,000 - 460,000 in Mainland China.
Risk management sits at the top of the range in both markets, and Hong Kong pay is ahead of Mainland China at this level. Contract roles, such as those supporting remediation or review programmes, are priced as a monthly or day rate, so they don’t compare directly with an annual salary.

AI now sits on both sides of the control function. Hong Kong’s banks have moved quickly from pilots towards production, and the same technology is making scams and fraud attempts more convincing. That puts new work in front of every line of defence.
Regulatory expectations are clear on accountability. The HKMA’s guiding principles on generative AI in customer-facing applications place responsibility with the board and senior management, and expect banks to follow the Privacy Commissioner’s AI framework where personal data is involved. Teams in Mainland China work within their own data and AI rules, which adds a cross-border dimension for regional functions.
For hiring, this is shifting the skills mix. Models need checking for drift over time rather than validating once, so model risk and validation experience is in demand. Auditors are being asked for assurance over how AI is governed, and financial crime teams over how AI-enabled fraud is detected. When you’re interviewing, asking candidates how they have tested or challenged an AI-driven control can tell you a lot.
Hong Kong’s growth plans are creating control work as fast as they create revenue. As private credit exposures grow through fund lending and wealth channels, risk teams are being asked for look-through analysis and stronger valuation governance. The expansion of fixed income and currency markets puts conduct standards and individual accountability back on the compliance agenda. And the city’s gold hub ambitions, linked to the Shanghai Gold Exchange, bring provenance and responsible-sourcing questions to financial crime teams.
Across the boundary, Mainland policy support for green and transition finance means credit risk professionals who can assess a client’s transition plan are increasingly valuable. For hiring managers, these shifts are a useful guide to where specialist capability will be needed next, and where it may be worth building ahead of demand.
